Rejuvenate yourself with a refreshing Coconut Water & Cardamom Cocktail

As the weather starts warming up, it is time for the fresh summer flavours to come out and play.

Next up in our flavour combination series is Coconut Water & Cardamom. We have been waiting to pair these two for a while now. This cocktail is as refreshing as the dew drops that make the Summer mornings bliss.

Coconut Water is a clear liquid found inside the coconut shell that has naturally hydrating properties. It contains a concentration of electrolytes, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that have numerous health benefits. This relatively low-calorie drink is a natural sports drink and is commonly used to treat dehydration from diarrhoea, exercise, and even hangover. It has a subtle, sweet, and nutty flavour. Its smooth texture and great taste make it a great mixer for cocktails.

Cardamom, also known as Elaichi in India, is an aromatic spice from the same botanical spice family as ginger and turmeric. It has been used for centuries in cooking as well as in medicines. It is a natural detoxifier with an intensely unique, zesty, spicy, and herbaceous flavour. This Queen of Spices is native to the Indian Subcontinent and is also cultivated across the world in countries like Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Nepal, and Guatemala. Cardamom gives an unmatched flavour and aroma to any dish or beverage that cannot be recreated by any other spice. It is also used in home remedies to treat infections like cough & cold and is often used as a breath freshener as well.  It helps lower cholesterol, combat depression, fight cancer, is good for the heart, aids digestion, used to treat urinary tract infection, settles nausea, and upset stomach. There are 2 types of cardamoms that are widely used in Indian and Middle Eastern cuisines:

  • Green Cardamom: Small Green pods with black seeds. It is the more expensive variety. Used in small quantities due to its intense flavour. Green Cardamoms are aromatic, herbaceous and are used in sweet and savoury dishes as well as beverages.
  • Black Cardamom: 3 times the size of the Green Cardamom, this variety has a brown pod and black seeds. It has a very bold smoky and peppery aroma and is used mainly for savoury dishes.

Tasting Notes: The refreshing and subtle tropical taste of the Coconut Water complements the delicate floral notes of the Elderflower Liqueur.  Gin not only brightens up the coconut water but also brings an array of spices and botanicals to the cocktail. The tincture imparts an intense cardamom aroma that has herbaceous and floral notes. It brings a new layer of dimension and complexity to the cocktail. The flavours of juniper and cardamom pair beautifully in this cocktail. The egg white combines the coconut flavour with the sweetness of the sugar to create a creamy smooth texture that is balanced with the crisp lime juice. As the coconut water ice cube melts, it enhances the coconut flavour in the cocktail thereby keeping it constantly fresh.
